There seems to be some confusion in the HVAC/R industry right now about press fittings. So RLS – manufacturer of the original RLS (Rapid Locking System) press fittings that were first sold under the ZoomLock brand name – wants to set the record straight.

While you can’t always trust what you hear, you can always trust the facts. And here are some undisputed facts about HVAC/R press fittings:

FACT: RLS is the inventor, patent holder and manufacturer of the original HVAC/R press fittings, which were introduced under the ZoomLock brand in 2015, through an exclusive agreement with Parker Hannifin Corporation’s Sporlan division. The fittings were designed and engineered – and continue to be made – in America.

FACT: The exclusive agreement ended in late 2019, and RLS stopped supplying fittings for ZoomLock in August of 2020. (See the official announcement here)

FACT: In August of 2020, Parker began selling press fittings manufactured in Europe by Conex Banninger (the Conex B MaxiPro line) under the “ZoomLock Max” name.

FACT: RLS now sells the exact same fittings, tools and jaws that were originally sold as ZoomLock under their own RLS brand name. That is why the original ZoomLock tools and jaws still work perfectly with RLS fittings – and always will.

FACT: Any rumors being circulated about RLS/ZoomLock jaws needing to be “traded in” or replaced are simply not true.

FACT: RLS fittings and jaws use a patented double circular press, with 360˚ metal-to-metal connections. ZoomLock Max/Conex B MaxiPro fittings and jaws use a hexagonal press similar to what is used in plumbing.

FACT: RLS fittings have a 6+ year proven track record of success worldwide. Conex Banninger introduced the new B MaxiPro design sometime after June of 2019.

FACT: The only difference between the original ZoomLock fittings and the current RLS fittings is the name. The product is identical – and made in the same American factory.

U.S. Boiler Company has released the new Alta Combi boiler, the industry’s first and only gas-adaptive combi boiler with 10:1 turndown.

The all-new Alta Combi high efficiency condensing boiler offers best in class, next-generation gas adaptive technology that provides the shortest installation time and lowest operating costs. The powerful gas-adaptive technology offers true “no touch” combustion setup. There are no manual throttle or offset adjustments. Engineered for five-minute start-up, the boiler’s control system provides continuous, automatic self-calibration of burner combustion by adapting to component wear, variations in fuel, environment, and vent air pressure to provide safe, efficient, and clean combustion at all times.

Converting from natural gas to LP is simple. No additional parts or conversion kits are needed. The Alta also includes a sensor-less reset, which performs the functions of a conventional outdoor reset without the need to install an outside sensor.

Domestic hot water response time is virtually instantaneous. Domestic hot water temperatures are maintained under all demand conditions, and the unit’s DHW recirculation system can be set to either economy or comfort mode.

At 95% AFUE, The Alta Combi is currently available with 136 MBH DHW input (3.7 GPM) / 120 MBH heating input. However, stay tuned! U.S. Boiler Company will be releasing a larger Alta Combi boiler (200 MBH DHW / 150 heating) and numerous heating-only Alta models (80, 120, 150 and 180 MBH) later this year.

Each Alta comes with value-added components and features, including an AltaFastPipe primary/secondary piping assembly, lift-away front and side panels for three-sided access, boiler flow safety switch (UL353) and display indicator, ProPress compatibility and a five-year parts warranty.

Carrier recently launched a new Performance™ Series high wall ductless system including the 40MAHB indoor unit and 38MARB outdoor unit, and the multi-poise 40MBAA air handler. As the latest, fully communicative additions in Carrier’s evolving ductless line of heating and cooling offerings, the products provide versatility and energy efficiency, as well as single and multi-zone capabilities. The indoor high wall 40MAHB unit provides seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) ratings up to 28.1 and heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) ratings up to 13.0 and is available in sizes 9k through 36k. The 40MBAA boasts SEER ratings up to 20.0 and HSPF ratings up to 10.0, and is available in sizes 24k, 36k and 48k. Carrier is a part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), the leading global provider of healthy, safe and sustainable building and cold chain solutions.

The 40MAHB indoor high wall unit includes the Airflow Direction feature, which automatically controls the louver direction up and down, or left and right. Other standard features include a built-in relative humidity sensor; the Follow Me feature, which allows the temperature to be changed from the handheld remote; an auto restart function; three modes of standard operation; and occupancy sensors.

The 40MAHB offers simplified installation and maintenance. Plus, increased total piping length and enhanced piping lift enable greater breadth of application and 2 installation. There are also a wide variety of control options including a wireless remote controller, an optional wired remote controller, 24V interface and Wi-Fi kit.

The 40MAHB is backward compatible with the 38MA*R and the 38MARB is backward compatible with 40MAQ, 40MBCQ, 40MBFQ, 40MBDQ, and 40MBAA, allowing for greater flexibility when upgrading older system components without requiring complete system replacement.

The 40MBAA multi-poise air handler has a variable-speed ECM motor that synchronizes with the Carrier® Inverter Ductless heat pump single zone 38MARB size 24k, 38MBRB sizes 36k/48k, or with select 38MGR multi-zone models. Robert Bosch Power Tools GmbH, a division of the Robert Bosch Group, enhances inventory management with Bosch Bluehound, a Bluetooth® tag-based asset management system that can be applied to virtually any construction site asset, from a truck down to the smallest drill.

Bosch combines connectivity, engineering and the cloud to enable real-time asset tracking from the warehouse to the jobsite and everywhere in between. Designed with the large contractor in mind, Bluehound collects actionable data that construction firms can use to improve planning, coordination, compliance and personnel training.

The Bluehound system was developed using direct feedback from construction firm owners, yard managers, technology officers, operations managers and everyone in between. The system’s solutions-based features include:

  • Asset delivery tracking from warehouse to jobsite with available notifications when the product arrives
  • End-of-day asset tracking
  • The ability to easily trace any asset — no matter the brand — via serial number, inventory number, model number, warranty information, etc.
  • Maintenance alerts and updates to keep track of safety equipment and scheduled asset maintenance
  • Asset assignment to jobsite, job box, warehouse and individuals for complete transparency to where a tool is assigned
  • Employee certification storage
  • Document storage linked to an asset

Bluehound is an open system that allows users to log and track thousands of assets and can be used with any brand tool, not only Bosch products. Assets can be tagged with Bluetooth modules GCC30-4, which are mounted on power tools and other work equipment. Bluehound seamlessly integrates with the GCY42 connectivity module on connected-ready Bosch tools.

The Bluehound system eliminates the drain on time and resources caused by extended wait times for tools and materials. Users can quickly see the location, location history and operational status of any tagged asset. With the ability to store safety certifications and other documentation for assets, Bluehound can help safety managers confirm compliance with OSHA regulations without causing delays. The system also helps to decrease unnecessary expenditures that come with maintaining non-utilized or under-utilized tools.

The system gives users the ability to notify workers when assets assigned to them are left behind at the warehouse or jobsite in real-time, further increasing accountability and loss prevention. Plus, Bluehound consolidates site data in order to manage tools that are used on individual job sites. The system gives users increased access to up-to-date information, helping to improve both costs and bid accuracy.

“We developed Bluehound taking into consideration every crew member on a large construction site,” explains Tammy Bauer, pro user marketing manager and Bluehound business owner, Bosch. “We sought to streamline asset management and simplify tracking for everyone involved and to create a more connected jobsite. Thus far, we’ve seen promising results with contractors commenting on ease of use as well as the application’s mobile-friendly interface and useful data tracking.”

Bluehound uses a subscription-based pricing model, a tiered monthly contract that corresponds to the amount of Bluetooth tags a company uses for tracking assets, inclusive of software and replacement tags.
