The SLX high output ultraviolet fixture from UV Resources efficiently and affordably disinfects HVACR airstreams, cooling coils and drain pans to keep them free of infection-causing and efficiency-robbing microorganisms and organic matter.

ASHRAE research shows that ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UV-C) kills pathogens on surfaces and in air streams, and also stops the proliferation of infectious or allergenic agents.

One of the HVAC industry’s most favored energy- and maintenance-saving technologies, UV-C is known to reliably provide cleaner air by preventing microbial buildup in cooling coils, drain pans and duct surfaces.

The high output SLX fixture, which stands for Single Lamp exterior-mounted fixture, offers facility managers and building owners an option to disinfect air and surfaces that are typically inaccessible from inside the air handler. Additionally, when applied adjacent to the cooling coil, the high output lamps can deliver improved HVAC heat transfer, decreased energy use, reduced maintenance downtime and damage and improved IAQ.

The SLX lamps provide 360-degrees of high UV-C intensity and easily mount to the exterior of supply, return or exhaust plenums or ducts, making it ideal for disinfecting air streams in HVACR equipment. Widely used in hospitals and institutional applications, UV-C energy (254nm) also lowers the cost of maintaining and operating HVAC equipment.

Suitable for new systems and as a retrofit product, the SLX can be easily installed in most light-commercial, commercial, industrial, healthcare and manufacturing applications.

Ideal for a full-range of applications including air streams of 33 to 170 degrees F, 100-percent RH, and any velocity, the SLX fixture’s high intensity lamp protrudes into the duct, where it can best treat the air stream.

The SLX fixture comes standard with the exclusive EncapsuLamp™ (FEP lamp coating) technology, which protects installers, plenums and air streams from lamp residues such as gas, mercury and glass, should an accidental lamp break occur. In addition, it insulates the lamp’s surface from the fluctuating temperatures of A/C systems, which, according to EncapsuLamp manufacturer UV Resources, can affect lamp output and performance.

The company anticipates UL listing to ABQK in early 2019.

The SLX high output fixture is constructed of premium materials with heavy gauge powder coated steel, as well as a waterproof power supply.

“Because of its high output and installation flexibility, the SLX can be used most anywhere, which has made it especially popular with contractors for most any application, including food and pharmaceutical processing plants, as well as hospitals and nursing homes,” says
Dan Jones, President of UV Resources, based in Santa Clarita, Calif.

“Besides disinfecting air streams, UV-C offers significant operational benefits, including keeping HVAC coils, drain pans and other internal surfaces free of microbes, organic dirt and grime — materials that produce odor and reduce airflow and cooling capacity.”

New compatibility allows customers to control home comfort with their voice

Côr 5C and 7C thermostats now work with Google Assistant, allowing customers to more easily manage their smart home. Côr is a brand under UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Google Assistant smart speakers, like Google Home, have integrated support for home automation, letting users control smart home devices such as the Côr 5C and 7C thermostat with their voice. For example, customers can ask the Google Assistant to control the temperature set point of the thermostat; or get instant feedback about the state of the thermostat temperature and mode.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our customers the ability to control their home comfort with more popular devices from Google,” said Todd Nolte, director, product management, Côr. “This compatibility allows Côr customers the ability to monitor and change their home system settings with just their voice or via an easy-to-use app.”

Côr Series Wi-Fi® thermostats keep homeowners connected and in control. The mobile app lets customers easily create and edit their schedules, review energy usage reports and change home temperature from anywhere. Plus, they can provide instant feedback on estimated energy savings, teaching users how to better balance comfort and savings.

“With Google Assistant, you can easily control all the connected devices in your home, from lights to thermostats, all in one simple place,” said Michele Turner, director, Smart Home Ecosystem, Google. “Our compatibility with Côr advances that effort to make the home smarter to help people live comfortably.”

The Côr 5C and 7C thermostats can save homeowners an average of 20 percent on their heating and cooling costs and are available through Carrier’s nationwide dealer network. The Côr thermostat is already compatible with Amazon Echo and will work with the vast majority of 24 volt communicating heating and cooling systems.

McElroy introduces new sizes to the Acrobat™ machine line which feature the revolutionary QuikFit™ carriage that allows operators to meet the challenges of fusing large-diameter polypropylene pipe in close-quarter working environments.

“Acrobat with QuikFit carriages provide a solution through a modular single-size jaw design that is going to make a huge difference in how large-diameter polypropylene pipe is installed,” said Paul Donaldson, Manager of Mechanical Engineering at McElroy. “The beauty of this design is that it simplifies the fusion process to help serve the needs of the plumbing, mechanical and HVAC industry.”

The new machines, which fuse 355mm to 630mm (14” to 24”) polypropylene pipe, was in response to a demand in the industry for lightweight, large-diameter butt fusion equipment that would make overhead pipe installations more safe and efficient. Fusing large pipe on plumbing and mechanical installations is intricate work whether it’s new construction or a building retrofit. Operators work around ducting, framing, stud walls and other obstacles, leaving little space to fuse pipe, especially when fusing pipe many feet in the air. If the fusion machine is heavy and bulky, it makes the job difficult or even impossible.

McElroy took on the challenge by custom designing the Acrobat with QuikFit carriage to break down into multiple components to reduce weight and size. The ability to assemble the upper and lower jaws of the carriage around the pipe by hand eliminates the need for extra equipment and manpower that would be required to lift and fit an entire carriage into a cramped space. The carriage is half the weight of alternative machines and can be arranged in 4-, 3- and 2-jaw configurations for an even smaller footprint.

All of the fusion equipment, including the carriage, drill-powered facer, heater and hydraulic power unit (HPU), can be loaded on a single scissor lift platform. The flexibility of the machine allows it to fuse pipe in any orientation that is required on plumbing, mechanical and HVAC installations, including vertical and overhead.

The Acrobat is offered in single pipe sizes to eliminate the need for inserts which also keeps the machine lightweight. Each Size Package includes the jaws, heater and lightweight facer blade holders. To complete the machine, there is a common Core Package that can be paired with any of the sizes which helps reduce costs. It includes the cylinder assemblies, clamp assemblies, carriage skid, facer stand, a detachable facer motor for easy maneuverability, a heater/facer rolling cart to move everything easily from joint to joint, an HPU with DataLogger® capability and shipping container.

The Acrobat with QuikFit carriage is another example of McElroy’s dedication to the industry by designing machines to meet the unique challenges seen in the field. McElroy offers the world’s most complete line of fusion equipment with sales, service and support worldwide. Equipment is purchased through an international network of distributors.
