Baltimore — Danfoss, a leading manufacturer of high-efficiency electronic and mechanical components and controls for air-conditioning, heating, refrigeration and motion systems, and provider of energy management and control solutions for the food retail industry, was chosen by SUPERVALU INC. to provide a range of energy-saving products and support for a remodel project that has resulted in the development of the company’s first grocery store operating 100 percent on natural refrigerants. Specifically, Danfoss played a key role in supporting SUPERVALU, one of the largest companies in the U.S. grocery channel, through refrigeration system design and strategy to installation and commissioning.
The remodel of SUPERVALU’s Albertsons® store in Carpinteria, Calif., included a facility expansion – doubling the store’s footprint to 43,000 square feet, and the conversion of an R22-based refrigeration system to one that uses nothing but environmentally-friendly natural refrigerants. The new system operates primarily on CO2, but also includes ammonia in medium-temperature cascade systems and propane in select self-contained floor cases.
The Danfoss products used throughout the store include CO2 controls for low-temperature applications, compressor controls, temperature transducers, pump and liquid vapor separator safety controls. The self-contained, propane-cooled floor cases also feature the Danfoss SLV controller and variable speed compressor. In addition to helping the store save energy, money and resources by simplifying system control, Danfoss verified proper system communication between these state-of-the-art case controllers and the Danfoss control system to ensure proper monitoring.
