Chicago — At the 10th World Plumbing Conference in New Delhi, India, the World Plumbing Council (WPC) elected American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) Executive Director/CEO Jim Kendzel, MPH, CAE, to a three-year term as a Director on the WPC Executive Board. Established in 1990 and headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, the WPC maintains NGO status with the World Health Organization and carries out a mission to unite the world plumbing industry and promote the role of plumbing in improving public health and safeguarding the environment.

Kendzel began his career in the public health sector and has extensive experience at both the national and international levels in codes and standards development, conformity assessment activities, education/training, and professional certification programs. Kendzel carries a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan and is a Certified Association Executive.

In 2010, Kendzel joined ASPE, whose core purpose is to enhance and promote the profession of plumbing engineering while assisting in improving the safety and well-being of the public on a global scale, and has since increased ASPE’s exposure in the international plumbing community by serving on numerous committees and groups, including the Plumbing Industry Leadership Coalition, Plumbing Efficiency Research Coalition Executive Committee, Uniform Solar Energy & Hydronics Technical Committee (which he chairs), ASTM International Main Committee E.60 on Sustainability, and the International Code Council Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas Membership Council.

“I am truly honored to be elected to serve with such an esteemed group of global leaders in the plumbing profession,” Kendzel says. “I want to thank the ASPE Board of Directors for their vision in knowing that we need to be engaged on the global level and allowing me to play a vital role in WPC and showcase ASPE at the same time.”

Kendzel’s first assignment as Director will be to chair the World Plumbing Day Committee. World Plumbing Day, initiated by WPC, is celebrated annually on March 11 to promote the important role plumbing plays in the health and safety of modern society. Kendzel will be working with the WPC Executive Board, local ASPE chapters and members, and other industry representatives to organize and suggest activities and events to celebrate World Plumbing Day 2014 on the local level.

“This is a great opportunity, not only for Jim but for all of ASPE because ASPE needs to be at the forefront of the worldwide plumbing industry,” says ASPE President William Hughes Jr., CPD, LEED AP, FASPE. “Attending the World Plumbing Conference further reinforced the need for ASPE to be part of this prestigious organization, and having Jim involved with this elite group of individuals identifies ASPE as a leader in the industry and provides further recognition of the key role of plumbing engineering in protecting public health worldwide.”
