McKinstry commences federal energy projects

Denver — McKinstry commenced work last month on several energy savings measures for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) that will address aging infrastructure needs, reduce energy waste and save money at federally-owned facilities across six states in the GSA Rocky Mountain Region.

McKinstry is one of 16 Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) prequalified to provide energy services to the federal government under the Department of Energy (DOE) Super ESPC Program. GSA’s Rocky Mountain Region awarded a contract to McKinstry that included auditing more than 5.8 million square feet of building space, resulting in energy conservation measures now being implemented in 22 buildings.

The energy conservation measures will save the federal government more than $15 million dollars in energy costs and help avoid more than $3 million in operating expenditures for the duration of the program.  The resulting carbon emission reduction is equivalent to taking over 2,000 cars off the road a year. These savings will be measured and verified by McKinstry for a 20-year performance period.

Many of the building retrofits will occur concurrently. To manage simultaneous deliveries in multiple states, McKinstry will draw on resources from offices across the country. “We’re a collaborative company,” said Tom Bowen, regional director. “Leveraging multiple McKinstry offices is how we are able to provide a low-cost and high-value project to the GSA.”

As the largest landowner in the United States, the federal government sets a critical example by actively improving the energy efficiency of its facilities.

“McKinstry’s systems approach to energy reductions closely aligns with the government’s proactive stance on energy efficiency,” said Ash Awad, vice president of energy services. “We’re proud to help the GSA save money for the American taxpayer and reduce energy waste.”
