ASHRAE recognizes outstanding achievements

Atlanta — Ninety-four people will be recognized by ASHRAE for their contributions to the Society and the built environment industry at the Society’s 2015 Annual Conference held here June 27-July 1.

Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award

Raymond Cohen, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, receives the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award. This annual award is given to an ASHRAE Fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work. Cohen is retired and resides in Valparaiso, Ind. He served as the Herrick Professor of Engineering and the director of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.

Andrew T. Boggs Service Award.

Presidential Member Bill Harrison, Life Member, receives the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award.  The award recognizes an Exceptional Service Award recipient for continuing unselfish, dedicated and distinguished service. Harrison is CEO, Harrison Energy Partners, Little Rock, Ark.

Distinguished 50-Year Member Award

The Distinguished 50-Year Member Award is given to individuals who have been a member for a minimum of 50 years, and who have performed outstanding service. The following six members received the award:

Arthur G. Bendelius, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is president, A&G Consultants, Inc., Big Canoe, Ga.

Robert S. Burdick, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is owner, Burdick Refrigeration Engineering, Training/Technology, Tucson, Ariz.

Paul N. Deltz, P.E, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is president and owner, MEPFC Engineering LLC., New Braunfels, Texas.

James H. Lang, Life Member, is being recognized posthumously. He resided in Atlanta, Ga., prior to his death.

Vincent D. Lee-Thorp, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, resides in Great Falls, Va.

Evans J. Lizardos, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, OPMP, is president, Lizardos Engineering Associates, Mineola, N.Y.

Presidential Member Ronald P. Vallort, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is president of Ron Vallort and Associates, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Elmhurst, Ill.

Exceptional Service Award

The Exceptional Service Award recognizes Distinguished Service Award recipients who have continued to serve faithfully and with exemplary effort. Eleven members were recognized:

The Distinguished Service Award salutes members of any grade who have served the Society faithfully and with distinction and who have given freely of their time and talent in chapter, regional and Society activities. The following 49 members were selected:

Journal Paper Award

Paul Lindahl receives the Journal Paper Award for the article, “Cold Weather Operation of Cooling Towers,” judged to be the best article published in ASHRAE Journal. The article was published in March 2014.  Lindahl is director of market development, SPX Thermal Equipment and Services, Overland Park, Kan.

Crosby Field Award

Didier Thevenard, Ph.D., P.Eng., and Mark W. Shephard are the recipients of the Crosby Field Award.  Their paper, “Temperature Trends for Locations Listed in the Tables of Climatic Design Conditions in the 2013 ASHRAE Handbook – Fundamentals,” was judged to be the best paper presented before the Society. Thevenard is a system data manager, Canadian Solar, Guelph, Ontario; Shephard is a physical scientist, Environment Canada, Toronto, Ontario.

Technical Paper Award/Poster Presentation Award

The following paper received a Technical Paper Award, which recognizes the authors of the best papers presented at Society conferences.

Limin Zhou, Ph.D., David W. Herrin, Ph.D., P.E., and Tianxiang Li, Ph.D., receive an award for “A Design Approach for Preventing and Solving Combustion Oscillation Problems.” They also receive a Poster Presentation Award, which recognizes the authors of peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society meetings. Zhou is an acoustics test engineer, Akustica Inc., Bosch Group, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Herrin is an associate professor at the University of Kentucky, Lexington; and Li is an associate research professor, University of Kentucky, Lexington.

Tami M. Brandl, Ph.D.; Morgan D. Hayes, Hongwei Xin, John A. Nienaber, Ph.D., P.E.;  Hong Li, Roger A. Eigenberg, John P. Stinn, Ph.D., and Timothy A. Shepherd receive an award for “Heat and Moisture Production of Modern Swine.” Brandl is an agriculture engineer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Ag Research Service, Meat  Animal Research Center, Clay Center, Neb.; Hayes is a clinical assistant professor, University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.; Xin is Charles F. Scott Bucking, Ph.D., Andreas Athienitis, Ph.D., Eng., and Radu Zmeureanu, Ph.D., Eng., receive an award for “Multi-Objective Optimal Design of a Near Net Zero Energy Solar House.” Bucking is a postdoctoral Fellow, McMaster University, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Hamilton, Ontario;  Athienitis is a professor and NSERC/Hydro Quebec Industrial Research chair, and scientific director, NSERC Smart Net Zero Energy Buildings Strategic Research Network, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec; Zmeureanu is a professor, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec.

Yang Zou, Ph.D., Hanfei Tuo, Ph.D., and Pega S. Hrnjak, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, receive an award for “R410A Maldistribution Impact on the Performance of Microchannel Evaporator.” Zou is a research engineer, Creative Thermal Solutions Inc., Urbana, Ill.; Tuo is a development specialist, R&D Research Center, Praxair Inc., Tonawanda, N.Y.; Hrnjak is with the University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.

Willis H. Carrier Award

Morgan D. Hayes receives the Willis H. Carrier Award, which is given to a member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at a Society conference.  The award is presented for “Heat and Moisture Production of Modern Swine.” Hayes is a clinical assistant professor, University of Illinois, Urbana, Ill.

Lincoln Bouillon Award

Gregory A. Schnable of the Sacramento Valley Chapter receives the Lincoln Bouillon Award.  The award recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing  membership. The award commemorates Presidential Member Bouillon’s efforts in recruiting new members.  Schnable is senior sales engineer, Clyde Equipment Co. Inc., Lafayette, Calif.

Chapter Program Star Award

William P. Lee, P.E., HFDP, of the Hawaii Chapter, receives the Chapter Program Star Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. He is principal, mechanical and fire protection engineering, Coffman Engineers, Honolulu, Hawaii.

William J. Collins Jr. Research Promotion (RP) Award

Robert C. Kunkel, P.E., HFDP, of the Tucson Chapter, receives the William J. Collins Jr. RP Award. The award, named in honor of Presidential Member Collins, recognizes a chapter RP chair who excels in raising funds for ASHRAE’s RP campaign. Kunkel is a mechanical engineer, KC Mechanical Engineering LLC, Tucson, Ariz.

Environmental Health Award

John D. Spengler, Ph.D., receives the Environmental Health Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental health issues. Spengler is Akira Yamaguchi Professor of Environmental Health and Human Habitation, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Mass.

Government Activities Award

Robert Craddock of the Regina Chapter and Ross D. Montgomery, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, HBDP, CPMP, BEMP, BEAP, of the Florida West Coast Chapter, receive the Government Activities Award. The award recognizes individuals for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to the Society. Craddock is managing director, Inland Metal, Regina, Saskatchewan; Montgomery is president, Quality Systems and Technology Inc., Parrish, Fla.

Student Activities Achievement Award

Adam Parker of the Southern Piedmont Chapter receives the Student Activities Achievement Award, which recognizes a chapter Student Activities Committee chair for service related to the goals and growth of student activities.  Parker is territory manager, PACE Inc., Charlotte, N.C.

Homer Addams Award

Limin Zhou, Ph.D., receives the Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. The award encourages graduate student research and perpetuates the memory of its namesake, ASHVE Presidential Member Addams. Zhou is an acoustics test engineer, Akustica Inc., Bosch Group, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award

Zhecho Dimitrov Bolashikov, Ph.D., receives the Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, which is given to a promising investigator for significant accomplishment in the general area of peoples’ response to the environment. Bolashikov works at the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Civil Engineering, International Center for Indoor Environment and Energy, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark.
