Buffalo Grove, Ill. — Brian Hoffenberg, of S&K Plumbing, discusses fall and winter storm season preparation for inclement weather, as it pertains to maintaining sump pumps.
“Each year when summer transitions into fall and then winter, there can be prolonged periods of rain, strong storms or sudden downpours that put a very high strain on basement and crawlspace sump pumps and pump systems,” said Brian, General Manager of S&K Plumbing and Illinois Licensed Plumber. “For that reason, it is crucial to always be aware of the functionality and state of your primary and battery backup sump pump systems to protect against flooding.”
To ensure this, Brian suggests making a quick checklist for proper function and maintenance. First, homeowners should check and test primary sump pump operation by manually operating the switch. Next, also check and test battery backup systems for pump function and battery charge, and then check sump pump discharge lines outside the home to keep them free of flexible hoses and debris that can restrict flow or freeze in the colder months and cause pumps to overheat and fail.
“Older homes with basements but without sump pumps may have a naturally draining storm drain or combination sewer that combines the sanitary sewer and drain tiles around the basement to prevent flooding,” said Brian. “It is imperative for people that own older homes to make sure their sewer lines are clean and unobstructed in the months ahead as storm or sewer water can begin to back up from drains in the basement if a clog or partial clog is present.”
Additionally, periodically checking the water level in the sump pump pits to make sure it is not getting dangerously high can alert you to possible problems. If the water level in your sump pump pit gets within a few inches of the top, there is likely a problem with your pump.
